Thank you for inquiring about the Maryland Storm Girls Ice Hockey program. To give you an understanding on what we are about and what we are doing for the sport of girl’s ice hockey. Below are some points that may cover some but not all questions.

First, we are independent of any boys programs. The money that is paid or the sponsorship of girls program goes directly to the girls program. We offer 20 games and 20 practices starting Mid October. We have try outs early spring around the month of April at Ice World.

Some of our staff is involved in the summer girls program at Ice World which starts in June and ends in August. The summer program provides an opportunity for girls to play once a week and build their skill level. See our website for details on the summer programs.

We are different from the other Girls travel programs like York Devils, Navy or Rapids. Our schedule is not as intense. We have off during the holidays, we try to schedule 2 bi-week breaks in the mid of our season. Tournaments are at the option of each team, it is encourage that we attending at least one tournament so the girls have a better perspective on the sport.

Try Outs:

First thing, we try not to have the opinion of cutting players. What we are experiencing is an in rush of new players to the sport and girls that cannot make the commitment to a travel team that is on the road every  weekend.  The main purpose of try outs is to find out who wants to play, the age of the players and the skill level of those players. If you are completely new to the sport, the 1st step is to contact Ed Slusher at Ice World and enroll in a hockey basics program. If you have played boys recreational hockey or girls travel hockey then you need to come to tryouts. If you miss tryout dates, we can meet you at the rink for one on one evaluation during a stick and puck session.

What we had in 2011-2012:

We had a team of 14 girls that played at a U16 white level, we also had drop in players from other teams and local colleges to help the girls on their game. Our game schedules consist of away games to as far as West Chester PA, Reston Virginia and Frederick. Be prepared to drive 1-1/2 hours one way for a game, be there 1 hour before the game, and the game will last about 1-1/2 depending on how many penalties.  It is an investment of time for this girls sport.  We played CBHL non-league games, high school and private school teams.

Coached and Parents:

We had great success this year because a hand full of parents got involved and helped out the team. We had sponsorship from a local business that provided the team with help with expenses.  You don’t need great hockey knowledge, just the willingness to learn and help out. We are growing. We need coaches that want to help on the ice and coach teams during games. This requires a USA hockey certification class and a background check. Parents can help with clock management and team management.   Email us for more details.

What is new for 2012-2013:

Depending on how many girls show an interest in playing, the age diversity, we many have 2 teams this season. It is also depending on how many coaches are available to coach the expansion of the teams. The reality of it comes down to the numbers. Do we have enough players and coaches to field the teams that may be needed? Do you want to coach? Do you know of a coach? Let them know we need them. These decisions have to be made in the off season to prepare for the fall. Teams are ready to schedule game slots in early September for the entire season.

Mission Statement:

All girls play equal playing time no matter their skill level or performance. Nothing hurts a girls understanding of a game then being skip over because of lack of a certain skill or ability. During tournament games and the last 5 minutes of the game depending on the outcome of the game, it is the coach’s decision on the lines that play during those games.

You’re Part of the Equation!

You must bring them to practice!!, You must bring them to away games!!!  Each player is important support to the team no matter what skill level. Nothing hurts a team’s ability to compete then the lack of player’s and parents commitment to practice and games. Our away game teams are depending on our entire team showing up to play. We when we play at home; we want their entire team to show at our home rink.
